One person killed, 160 injured as hartal enters second day
Dhaka, Jan 30 (UNI) One person was killed, about 160 people were injured, and scores others arrested as the nationwide hartal called by the opposition in Bangladesh entered its second day today forcing normal life and business to a halt.

The main opposition Awami League and the left-leaning 11-party alliance enforced the hartal for three days in a row to protest the killing of a former Finance Minister and AL lawmaker Shah AMS Kibria and four others in Thursday’s grenade attack.

A rickshaw-puller was killed in a bomb attack and three motor-vehicles were set on fire by pro-hartal activists in the capital last night. Police said the incident occured when unknown assailants hurled the bomb as the peddler was passing by Darus Salam Road in Mirpur. Police said pro-hartal elements set fire to a minibus and a baby taxi in the city last night.

Witnesses said shops, schools, business houses and private offices were closed while traffic on the streets was thin in the capital today. The attendance in government offices was less than normal.

Opposition workers staged scattered pickets at different strategic points to enforce the shut down which will end tomorrow evening.

The authorities deployed huge riot police and paramilitary forces in Dhaka city to maintain order.
